Home About Susan Sargeant Associations and Resources McTimoney Chiropractic People Sports Chiropractic Animals Horses Dogs Blog Contact Me How To Find Me People What is McTimoney Chiropractic? McTimoney Chiropractic is a safe and natural solution for many conditions including back, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica, headaches (arising from the neck) and minor sports injuries. Chiropractors are committed, highly educated primary health care professionals focused on helping you to be as active and healthy as possible. Chiropractic is a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Exercises, health and lifestyle advice may also be included helping you, your family and pets lead a healthy life and maintain wellbeing. Who can it help? A package of chiropractic care is used regularly to help maintain good posture, promote health and improve performance, no matter what it is you do, from a high performance athlete to a senior member of the community enjoying a potter in the garden. Patients undergoing chiropractic care often report benefits from: Generalised aches and pains Cramp Elbow pain and tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, but not isolated occurrences Headache arising from the neck (cervicogenic) Inability to relax Joint pains Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis as an adjunct to core OA treatments and exercise Back Pain Lumbago Mechanical neck pain (as opposed to neck pain following injury i.e. whiplash) Migraine prevention Minor sports injuries and tensions Muscle spasms Plantar fasciitis (short term management) Rotator cuff injuries, disease or disorders Sciatica Shoulder complaints (dysfunction, disorders and pain) Soft tissue disorders of the shoulder Referral: Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and if your chiropractor feels your problem is not suitable for chiropractic care or needs further investigation, they will liaise with your GP and other health care providers to arrange an appropriate referral, as long as you provide your permission to do so. What happens at my first appointment At your first appointment a detailed case history is taken followed by a full examination which may include orthopaedic and neurological tests. A full explanation of the treatment is given. It is important for you to feel comfortable at all times so you will be given the option to undress to your underwear, you may wear a gown which is provided or you can remain in your clothes if you prefer. (Jogging trousers or loose clothing is best if you prefer to wear your own clothes.) Appropriate chiropractic adjustments will be made which are swift precise and gentle. Your comfort and care is of utmost importance, so each adjustment will be explained to ensure you know exactly what to expect. A treatment plan, advice and after care will be fully discussed. Where appropriate information can be given on life style, posture and exercises can also be incorporated. After treatment To maximise the benefits of your treatments it is good to understand that whilst you may feel better immediately you may also experience some physical symptoms due to your body realigning and using the muscles in a new and different way. Tiredness, aching and stiffness are common especially after the first session and should disappear after 48 hours You can also help yourself to recover more quickly and maximise treatment benefits by drinking plenty of water, avoiding sporting activities, gardening, shopping, lifting, long journeys or anything strenuous for 48 hours. How many sessions do I need? The number of sessions you will need depends on the extent and duration of the problem. Age, general fitness, posture, stress and emotional issues are all factors to be considered. On average a patient can expect between 2-6 visits – initially at weekly intervals then increasing to fortnightly then monthly as progress takes place. The number of treatments will be discussed with you prior to treatment. Once the problem is resolved it is beneficial to schedule regular maintenance treatments 3 or 4 times a year as a preventative measure to avoid set backs.
