Sometimes manual or low voltage electrical stimulation is applied to assist the process. The number of needles varies but may be only as few as two or three. Your practitioner will assess you and treatment will be tailored to you as an individual. Western medical acupuncture is a therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine. While Western medical acupuncture has evolved from Chinese acupuncture, its practitioners no longer adhere to concepts such as Yin/Yang and circulation of qi, and regard acupuncture as part of conventional medicine rather than a complete “alternative medical system”. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system, and its known modes of action include local antidromic axon reflexes, segmental and extrasegmental neuromodulation, and other central nervous system effects. Western medical acupuncture is principally used by conventional healthcare practitioners, most commonly in primary care. It is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain.Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects. We know that it increases the body’s release of natural painkillers – endorphin and serotonin – in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received.All of our chiropractors are trained in the use of medical acupuncture and registered members of the British Medical Acupuncture Society. You can read more about Helen here. Acupuncture originated in China over 2,000 years ago. It is still used in China as a form of medicine in it’s own right, as well as being used alongside Western medicine. It has been adapted, researched and refined to form its current modern practice all over the world. In Chinese medicine good health is said to be when the whole body and mind is in balance and the qi, or energy, is flowing smoothly throughout the body’s pathways, known as meridians. It is when this smooth flow is disrupted and becomes unbalanced, erratic or blocked that ill health, pain and emotional upset occurs. The holistic approach of acupuncture is based on gathering information of all signs and symptoms, diet and lifestyle factors and emotional and personal features specific to the person, allowing an individualised diagnosis and care plan to be made. By inserting fine needles into specific points in the body, the qi can be stimulated and encourage the body to restore its own natural harmony and balance. Conditions With a growing body of research into the effectiveness of acupuncture, the World Health Organisation (WHO) now has an extensive list of conditions where acupuncture is proven to be effective. These include: Low back pain Malposition of fetus, correction ofMorning sicknessNausea and vomitingNeck painSprainAllergtic rhinitis including hay feverBiliary colicDysentryHeadacheHypertensionHypotensionDental painEpigastraligia, acute (in peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis and gastrospasmPeriarthritis of shoulderPostoperative painRenal colicRheumatoid arthritisSciaticaTennis elbowAdverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapyDysmenorrhoea, primaryInduction of labourKnee painFacial painDepression Extract from: Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials. Chapter 3, Diseases and disorders that can be treated with acupuncture. Published by World Health Organization Acupuncture has been found to be effective at supporting individuals with many other conditions and improving their wellbeing. Support using acupuncture is offered for the following conditions and many more. Musculoskeletal pain and stiffness as a result of working conditions, sports injury, pregnancy and childbirth, age related aches and pains, arthritis, new or ongoing problems and pain in any part of the body.Bowel problems such as constipation, diarrhoea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other bowel disorders.Emotional disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia.Symptoms related to menopause such as hot flushes and irritability.Recurrent illness, frequent colds or flu, urine infections, thrush.Pregnancy support for things such as nausea, vomiting, back ache, indigestion, reflux, headaches, carpel tunnel syndrome.Pre-birth treatments to prepare women and their bodies for the birthTurning the breech baby and induction of labour, labour support.Postnatal support for healing post-birth, lactation, haemorrhoidsInfertility support This list does not cover everything, so please feel free to contact us for advice concerning your condition and whether or not acupuncture may be suitable for you. For detailed enquiries please ask to speak with Helen Oaten. What To Expect What happens in a treatment? Before your treatment starts a discussion about your problem will take place. A detailed medical and personal history will be taken from you, the level of detail is important in making a complete Chinese medicine diagnosis. Other tools such as observation and pulse taking are also used to make a diagnosis. You will then lie down and needles will be placed in certain points on your body. Helen may gently rotate the needles to further stimulate the acupuncture point, in order to achieve the desired treatment outcome. The needles stay in place for up to 20 minutes, at which point they will be removed. You may be given advice to follow after the treatment. Other techniques such as cupping, tuina or moxibustion may also be used, but Helen will explain the plan fully before beginning. Nothing will be done without your informed consent. How does it feel? The insertion of the needles is usually painless, but some people experience an initial sharp sensation that subsides quickly. Longer lasting sensations include tingling, heaviness, spreading and warmth. This is all normal and reassuring to Helen. If there is any discomfort Helen can adjust or remove the needle. During the treatments clients often feel relaxed and many fall asleep. Clients often leave feeling energised or grounded. How many sessions will I need? This is very dependant on the problem and the individual case. Some clients will feel better after a few treatments but others will need more. The majority of clients begin with a treatment once or twice a week for 6 weeks, at which point the plan is reassessed with the client. Some clients like to have regular acupuncture to maintain their health. Is is safe? Many studies have been conducted into the safety of acupuncture, with the results showing very few adverse reactions. The needles are pre-packed, sterile and for single-use only. Some people will experience mild dizziness or bruising, but such symptoms are usually short lasting. What shall I wear? Most commonly used acupuncture points are on the legs, arms, stomach and back so please wear something loose to allow easy access to these areas. It may be that a point is in a less accessible area, in which case you will be asked to remove an item of clothing and you can wear a gown. What rules and standards does Helen work to? Helen is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). This is a voluntary regulatory body. Any member must meet specified training standards and practice under a strict Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Safe Practice. Members are also required to undergo continued professional development and maintain a professional portfolio as evidence of ongoing learning. The BAcC provide full public liability insurance. Failure to meet to BAcC standards will result in removal of membership and insurance. Other treatment methods Moxibustion The herb Moxa (dried Mugwort) can be used when shaped into a cigar and hovered over the acupuncture point, or shaped into cones and placed on the needle handles. The warmth created when it is gently burned penetrates the acupuncture point to reinforce the action of the point. The moxa is not allowed to burn the skin. Cupping Cupping is a form of treatment where specifically designed glass cups that create a vacuum are used to generate suction when placed onto the skin. They can be left static or can be slid across the surface of the skin. Most commonly used on the back, cupping can be particularly helpful for relieving pain and muscular tension. Tuina Tuina is an ancient form of Chinese massage conducted over clothing. It uses the same points and works along the same meridians (channels of qi) of the body as acupuncture does, but pressure and manual techniques are used instead of needles. This is often a good option for people who prefer massage to needling. ©2011-2025 Taunton Chiropractic Neck and Back Pain Clinic | Privacy | Site by RB7 Design {"prefetch":[{"source":"document","where":{"and":[{"href_matches":"\/*"},{"not":{"href_matches":["\/wp-*.php","\/wp-admin\/*","\/wp-content\/uploads\/*","\/wp-content\/*","\/wp-content\/plugins\/*","\/wp-content\/themes\/tchiro\/*","\/*\\?(.+)"]}},{"not":{"selector_matches":"a[rel~=\"nofollow\"]"}},{"not":{"selector_matches":".no-prefetch, .no-prefetch a"}}]},"eagerness":"conservative"}]} jQuery(function(jQuery){jQuery.datepicker.setDefaults({"closeText":"Close","currentText":"Today","monthNames":["January","February","March","April","May","June","July","August","September","October","November","December"],"monthNamesShort":["Jan","Feb","Mar","Apr","May","Jun","Jul","Aug","Sep","Oct","Nov","Dec"],"nextText":"Next","prevText":"Previous","dayNames":["Sunday","Monday","Tuesday","Wednesday","Thursday","Friday","Saturday"],"dayNamesShort":["Sun","Mon","Tue","Wed","Thu","Fri","Sat"],"dayNamesMin":["S","M","T","W","T","F","S"],"dateFormat":"MM d, yy","firstDay":1,"isRTL":false});});

We take the time to understand you, your problems and your goals. Only by doing this can we ensure we have a robust plan in place for your recovery and/or performance improvement. Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation of the spine. As well as manual treatment, chiropractors are able to offer a package of care which includes advice on self-help, therapeutic exercises and lifestyle changes. Chiropractic treatment involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle. What makes Taunton Chiropractic such a popular local choice? You are at the centre of everything we do! From the moment you call, throughout your treatment and beyond our team of highly qualified practitioners and friendly staff do everything we can to make your visits positive, successful and good value. We disagree with a ‘one-size fits all model’. Whilst this may be a simple business plan for some clinics, it is also highly ineffective at achieving individual goals or sustainable improvements for patients and we feel strongly against providing this kind of sub-standard care. We work tirelessly everyday to provide the best possible care and have done so for over 35,000 patients to date. Do you want you to move better, feel better and perform better? With our help, you can! Visiting a Chiropractor When you see a chiropractor for the first time, they will do a detailed assessment of your health. You will be asked for information about your current condition and also about your medical history and overall health.Some of the questions you will be asked may not seem important, but they will help your chiropractor to establish an overall picture of your health and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition.If your chiropractor is unable to help, or decides that some other treatment would be more beneficial for your condition, you will be referred to your GP or to another health care professional. Physical Examination After assessing your condition and overall health, your chiropractor will carry out a physical examination (unless there is a specific reason for them not to). You should wear comfortable, loose clothing. A gown will be also be available for you to wear as you may be asked to remove some of your clothes.Your chiropractor will perform a range of tests that may include assessment of your posture and range of movement. They may do things such as measure your blood pressure and examine your abdomen to help find out what is wrong. Further Tests Once the initial assessment and physical examination has been done, your chiropractor may require you to have further investigations such as an X-ray (or another type of scan such as CT or MRI) or a blood test. If these are required, your chiropractor will explain why they are necessary, and how and when they will be arranged. Care Plan After these assessments and tests, your chiropractor will explain their findings and whether your condition can be helped by chiropractic treatment. If chiropractic treatment will help, you will be provided with a care plan, which will set out what you can expect when receiving chiropractic care, the costs of care and the treatment options that are available to you. You will also be told about exercises and lifestyle changes that can help you to manage your condition and assist with your recovery.You will be able to ask questions so that you fully understand what treatment is being proposed. If you are happy to proceed, you will be asked to give your written consent to treatment.Your chiropractor will keep all details about your health and treatment strictly confidential. No one will be allowed to see your records without your permission. Treatment Chiropractors are trained in using manipulation to free stiff or restricted joints. This can also be called ‘adjustments’ or ‘manual therapy’. Manipulation involves the chiropractor using their hands to apply quick, precise thrusts to the restricted joints. During manipulation there may be popping sounds (similar to the ‘crack’ heard when people flex their knuckles). This is quite harmless, it is just the sound of gas bubbles popping in the fluid of the joints as pressure is released.Treatment may also include massage, stretching, electrotherapy and the gradual moving of joints (‘mobilisation’). Some chiropractors use medical acupuncture techniques, while others may use a hand-held instrument called an ‘activator’ to manipulate joints.Self-help advice and rehabilitative care form an important part of chiropractic treatment. You will be given advice on how to manage your condition and prevent it from recurring. This may involve the application of ice or heat to reduce pain and inflammation, and advice on activity, posture and exercises you can do at home.Chiropractic treatment often takes place over a number of weeks, particularly if you have had the problem for a long time. Your chiropractor will discuss your programme of care with you, which will usually involve a series of treatments being given at defined intervals.Throughout the course of your care, your chiropractor will be able to answer any questions you might have about the management of your condition and your treatment. Is Chiropractic and Osteopathy the same? No, whilst there are some similarities across the two professions they are not the same. Individuals MUST be registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) to use the title Chiropractor. Referring to yourself as, impersonate or imply you are a Chiropractor when not registered with the GCC is an offence which can result in prosecution. All of our Chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council. Just a little side note… We are a family owned clinic with a passion for customer service. Our clinic has been awarded the ‘Patient Partnership Quality Mark’ (PPQM) and ‘Clinical Management Quality Mark’ (CMQM) by the Royal College of Chiropractors for a number of years now. The PPQM and CMQM awards were launched in 2006 by the Royal College of Chiropractors to recognise excellence in meeting the expectations patients have about their chiropractic care. All our chiropractors are members of the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), British Chiropractic Association (BCA) New patients are always welcome at the clinics, please call our friendly reception team to make an appointment on 01823 333973. ©2011-2025 Taunton Chiropractic Neck and Back Pain Clinic | Privacy | Site by RB7 Design {"prefetch":[{"source":"document","where":{"and":[{"href_matches":"\/*"},{"not":{"href_matches":["\/wp-*.php","\/wp-admin\/*","\/wp-content\/uploads\/*","\/wp-content\/*","\/wp-content\/plugins\/*","\/wp-content\/themes\/tchiro\/*","\/*\\?(.+)"]}},{"not":{"selector_matches":"a[rel~=\"nofollow\"]"}},{"not":{"selector_matches":".no-prefetch, .no-prefetch a"}}]},"eagerness":"conservative"}]} jQuery(function(jQuery){jQuery.datepicker.setDefaults({"closeText":"Close","currentText":"Today","monthNames":["January","February","March","April","May","June","July","August","September","October","November","December"],"monthNamesShort":["Jan","Feb","Mar","Apr","May","Jun","Jul","Aug","Sep","Oct","Nov","Dec"],"nextText":"Next","prevText":"Previous","dayNames":["Sunday","Monday","Tuesday","Wednesday","Thursday","Friday","Saturday"],"dayNamesShort":["Sun","Mon","Tue","Wed","Thu","Fri","Sat"],"dayNamesMin":["S","M","T","W","T","F","S"],"dateFormat":"MM d, yy","firstDay":1,"isRTL":false});});
