AISMA is an organisation which consists of over 75 firms of Accountants representing over 12,000 GP’s in 3,000 Practices across the whole of the UK. To be a member we are required to maintain certain standards and membership is not automatic. Lucie Boaler is the acting partner for our healthcare sector clients and she deals wholly with their Accountancy and Taxation affairs. She is supported by a dedicated team who have vast experience with medical practice accounts, locum/consultant expense claims, superannuation certificates and personal/partnership tax returns. All members of our medical accountancy team regularly attend courses run by AISMA and ICAEW Healthcare Group which ensures that we are up to date with consistent changes within the Profession. We also subscribe to Medeconomics. We currently act for over 40 medical practices and primary care networks, and almost 500 healthcare individuals, including locums, consultants, dentists, general practitioners and retired general practitioners. Our knowledgeable, dedicated team can provide a proactive service, which includes: Practice Accounts We can prepare user friendly financial accounts in a timely manner, including statistical information comparing your practice’s results to AISMA averages. We can also help you identify where your practice is under-performing and offer advice on reducing costs and improving financial performance. Detailed calculations for capital account equalisations and future drawings can be provided and discussed as required. We can also provide estimated profit figures for PSCE and for the publication of earnings disclosures on your practice website. Partners/Locums/Consultants We aim to minimise tax liabilities by ensuring that all relevant allowable expenses are claimed when we prepare your personal expense claims. Tax We will always prepare your Partnership or personal tax return on a timely basis. Tax liabilities will be minimised and you will be provided with early warning of any future tax liabilities. New and retiring doctors will be made aware of overlap relief issues. Partnership Agreement Advice can be provided in respect of all financial issues specific to your medical profession, particularly profit sharing arrangements and property ownership. Annual Certificate of Pensionable Profits We offer advice and prepare detailed calculations in respect of your certificate of pensionable profits which is required to be submitted to your local PCT by 28th February each year. Future liabilities will be advised in a timely fashion. We can also complete type 2 salaried GP superannuation certificates for individual salaried GPs. Personal Financial Planning Whilst we can only advise you generally on personal financial issues, we can put you in touch with experts in your field to assist you as required. Premises We have extensive knowledge of the surgery market place and work with Chartered Surveyors to offer advice on valuation of properties, 3 yearly rental reviews etc and of course all types of ownership issues. Ralph ACA FCCA - Senior Partner After qualifying with a London firm in 1994 Claire moved to a larger Practice where she gained valuable experience in Practice Management and Marketing. Claire joined Carleys in 2000 and became a Partner in 2002. Claire deals with a varied portfolio of clients in all fields. Dealing with audit, accounts and taxation she likes to offer a proactive business advisory service. Her particular area of interest is that of Corporate Finance. Claire advises clients on valuing their business, grooming it ready for sale and dealing with the sale process itself. She also advises clients in all aspects of purchasing a business from finance to due diligence. Get in touch with Claire Tanja Lawes BA (Hons) FCA - Managing Partner Tanja joined the firm in 1998 after graduating from Oxford Brooks University. She specialises in OMB limited companies, in particular helping clients to navigate all aspects of the first few years of set up and advising on tax efficiencies for the company and director/shareholders. She is therefore in a good position to help businesses as they grow and has experience in dealing with group companies. Tanja is also part of our audit team and advises clients in regard to bookkeeping software, in particular Kashflow and Xero. He left in 1996 to work for Moores Rowland and then subsequently with BDO Stoy Hayward. Having qualified with BDO, he returned to Carleys as a manager in 2000 and became an Associate on 1st January 2009. Carter ACA Larah joined Carleys in 2010 after leaving Gravesend Grammar School where she completed her A-Levels. She qualified as a chartered accountant in 2016 and has worked as a Medical Specialist since she joined the firm. Larah predominantly works for medical practitioners in practice and is experienced in preparing partnership accounts and partners' expense claims along with the related practice and personal taxation, VAT and pension issues, including preparing calculations on Annual Allowance Tax Charges and completing Annual Pension Certificates. The answer is: it depends. The cost of inheritance tax planning will be different to the cost of a filing tax return, which will in turn be different to the cost of a statutory audit, or the cost of ad-hoc business advisory services. So how does our fee structure work? Instead of set fees, which can lead to you paying more than you need to, we prefer to offer each client a bespoke quote for any work required after realising the full extent of your needs. We calculate your fee based on both time worked and the assigned staff member's charge-out rate. We firmly believe that this is fairer for you, as you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you are only paying for the services and time that you're actually using. Founded by Jim Carley in 1950 to serve businesses and individuals in the Gravesend area, we have since expanded to serve clients of all sizes from across all four corners of the globe. 1930s-1940s: Humble Beginnings In the mid 1930s, a young Jim Carley embarked on his accountancy journey, securing his first client - the Roma Café in Leyton - whilst still an apprentice. After World War II, Mr Carley worked with F. Sykes & Co, specialising in Film, Stage & Publishing. There, he met David Henley and sorted out his taxation affairs, which led to Jim expanding his network and attracting clients from the prestigious J. Arthur Rank starlet scheme. 1950: A Firm Footing In 1950, Jim acquired John Frarey's practice at 48 Windmill Street, Gravesend, and hired his first employee, Tony Cartwright. Committed to growing his client base in the Gravesend area, Jim commuted from Sidcup in a pre-war Ford 8. 1957: A New Identity: Carley & Co The merger of the Society of Incorporated Accountants with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales spurred Jim Carley to rebrand his own practice. The firm became known as "Carley & Co, Chartered Accountants", and took over Arthur G Mortimer's accountancy practice in Gravesend, onboarding his client base and signifying a new era. 1960-1975: Expansion and Innovation John Lord joined Carley & Co as a partner in 1960, and by 1968, the firm became one of the first in the country to use computerised technology to produce timesheets. In 1973, Carley & Co opened a second office in Longfield, and knocked through to 49 Windmill Street to expand the size of their existing Gravesend practice. David Annal was made a third Partner in the same year. During this period, Brian Hensman joined the firm (1966), left again, rejoined, and was made Partner (1975). The 1980s: Passing the Torch In 1979, Barry Owen joined the firm - and shortly thereafter, Carley & Co purchased "The Art School" at Overcliffe and converted these into new offices. In 1983, Jim Carley retired at the age of 72, marking almost 50 years of building his practice. In 1988, David Annal also retired, making John Lord the Senior Partner at the firm. The 1990s: New Leadership David Stacey joined the firm in 1991, and shortly afterwards the Longfield office was closed in order to fund a merger with Rowland Hall & Co in Gravesend - to coincide with this development, Alan Gooch was made a new Partner. In 1998, Tanja Lawes joined the firm as a graduate trainee. 2000-2002: The Carley Partnership In 2000, Carley & Co celebrated their 50th anniversary of continuous operation, and John Lord retired shortly after - marking 40 years of service as Partner. Claire Ralph joined in the same year, having previously worked at McBride's and Simpson Wreford & Co in managerial positions, and was made a Partner herself in 2002. Lucie Boaler also joined in 2002, and the firm rebranded from "Carley & Co" to "The Carley Partnership". 2010-2011: An Era Ends In September 2010, Jim Carley, the original founder of the firm, died at age 96. In 2011, Alan Gooch retired from active practice in order to take on a Consultant role. 2012-2019: Community and Continuity In 2012, Martin Entwistle was made an Associate - and Tanja Lawes joined him as an Associate in 2016. 2019 marked the promotion of Tanja Lawes to Partner and Lucie Boaler to Associate, as well as the retirement of Barry Owen. 2021-2023: Embracing Change The Carley Partnership managed to outlast the ravages of the pandemic, however the post-pandemic era still proved a catalyst for change. In 2021, Martin Entwistle left the firm - and Barry Owen, a former Partner, sadly passed away. The following year, Claire Ralph was promoted to Senior Partner, following the departure of Brian Hensman. In 2023, Lucie Boaler became a Partner - and Jean Laity, a long-serving employee of 47 years, retired. 2024: New Name, New Location 2024 was perhaps the most dramatic individual year for the firm to date - as the firm left their offices at 8 Overcliffe after 43 years, and the Gravesend area after 74 years; to move to the Fitted Rigging House at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham. To coincide with this move, the firm rebranded from "The Carley Partnership" to "Carleys", as many clients already knew them. 2025: 75 Years of Excellence Although this chapter has not yet been written, all of us here at Carleys are so tremendously excited to look back on how far the firm has grown since its official formation in 1950 - from starting as a sole proprietor to becoming a trusted name in accountancy and business advisory in the Medway, Gravesend and Kent areas. As we prepare to celebrate our 75th continuous year of operation, we would like to thank our fantastic clients for being a part of the journey with us. MEET THE PARTNERS & ASSOCIATES David A Stacey FCCA David joined the firm initially in 1991 working primarily in the accounts preparation and audit functions. He left in 1996 to work for Moores Rowland and then subsequently with BDO Stoy Hayward. Having qualified with BDO, he returned to Carleys as a manager in 2000 and became an Associate on 1st January 2009. David specialises in limited company accounts and audits, and has experience in corporate finance and company secretarial matters. Contact David Larah E Carter ACA Larah joined Carleys in 2010 after leaving Gravesend Grammar School where she completed her A-Levels. She qualified as a chartered accountant in 2016 and has worked as a Medical Specialist since she joined the firm. Larah predominantly works for medical practitioners in practice and is experienced in preparing partnership accounts and partners' expense claims along with the related practice and personal taxation, VAT and pension issues, including preparing calculations on Annual Allowance Tax Charges and completing Annual Pension Certificates. Ralph ACA FCCA - Senior Partner After qualifying with a London firm in 1994 Claire moved to a larger Practice where she gained valuable experience in Practice Management and Marketing. Claire joined Carleys in 2000 and became a Partner in 2002. Claire deals with a varied portfolio of clients in all fields. Dealing with audit, accounts and taxation she likes to offer a proactive business advisory service. Her particular area of interest is that of Corporate Finance. Claire advises clients on valuing their business, grooming it ready for sale and dealing with the sale process itself. She also advises clients in all aspects of purchasing a business from finance to due diligence. Contact Claire Tanja Lawes BA(Hons) FCA - Managing Partner Tanja joined the firm in 1998 after graduating from Oxford Brooks University. She specialises in OMB limited companies, in particular helping clients to navigate all aspects of the first few years of set up and advising on tax efficiencies for the company and director/shareholders. She is therefore in a good position to help businesses as they grow and has experience in dealing with group companies.
