The shoulder complex includes the collar bone at the front, and shoulder blade to the back. Therefore shoulder pain can cover quite a large area of different structures. The shoulder is extremely mobile, more in fact than any other joint in the body. Whilst this makes it extremely useful, it's also more prone to injury through overuse and trauma.Conditions treated:Tendonitis - Inflammation of a tendon. Occurs with most shoulder injuries, pain tends to be increased on movement.Bursitis - Inflammation of a bursa (fluid filled sac). Often associated with tendonitis, trauma or rotator cuff tear. Characterised by hot swelling with marked pain on movement.Rotator Cuff Tear - This is a muscle tear. It usually follows trauma and is very painful.Impingment Syndrome - Inflammation caused by a reduction of space within the shoulder joint. Often aggravated and indeed caused by frequently using your arms above your head. Associated with Oesteo-arthritic changes to the bones themselves, and frequently accompanied by joint instability.Instability - When your shoulder is able to move outside its structural limits. If caused by a trauma it is often associated with joint dislocation, and usually very painful. If non-traumatic onset, it can be caused by repetitive and excessive use particularly through throwing sports or swimming, or indeed you can simply be born with it.Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) - This occurs when the capsule around the shoulder joint adheres to itself with inflammation. Shoulder movement is greatly restricted and in the acute stage is accompanied by severe pain. The neck is the most mobile area of the spine, and combined with the volume of nerves in the area this makes it a very complex and sensitive region. Neck problems can therefore cause many symptoms other than neck pain and restriction, including arm pain, headaches, dizziness, visual blurring, nausea and more.Conditions treated:Whiplash - The common name given to injuries to the neck often sustained in a road traffic accident. Involves strains and sprains of the soft tissues and joints of the neck.Facet Dysfunction - Where the joints of the neck cause problems including pain and restriction.Torticollis - Also known as wry neck. At the bottom is the Sacrum, a triangular bone which is joined to the pelvis by the 2 large 'sacro-iliac' joints.Passing between each vertebra are bundles of nerves from the spinal cord supplying the low back, legs and feet. Often, low back issues will effect these nerves, producing a wide variety of symptoms in the many areas they supply.Conditions treated:Sprain / Strain - The lower spine, also called the lumbar spine, depends on soft tissues to help hold the body upright and support weight from the upper body. If put under too much stress, the low back muscles or soft tissues can become injured and painful.Facet Dysfunction - The joints of the spine are called facet joints. The tissue around them can become inflamed or irritated, it can cause pain and restriction of the lower back area, sometimes into the buttocks and tops of the legs.Sacro-iliac Joint Dysfunction - The tissues surrounding the joints between the sacrum and pelvis can become irritated and inflamed leading to pain over the base of the spine, buttock and even into the leg.Scoliosis - Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. There are many benefits to receiving chiropractic treatment for pain relief and improving joint, muscle and nerve function, minimising the curve.Sciatica - Irritation of the sciatic nerve which affects the deep tissue in the buttocks, down the inside of the thigh to the back of the calf. Often associated with low back pain, it can produce pain, numbness and tingling and in some cases, weakness within the areas it supplies.Piriformis Syndrome - Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, spasms and causes buttock pain. The sciatic nerve passes through the piriformis muscle, and can be compressed as it does so.Disc Herniation - A disc between one of the lumbar vertabrae can bulge (herniate) causing irritation of the nearby nerves. This can cause leg and/or buttock pain. It often results in reflex loss, a variety of nerve symptoms, numbness and tingling and even weakness in the muscles of the leg and foot. Having suffered a serous injury during a hockey match, she had exhausted all other avenues of help and so was lead to try a chiropractor. Miraculously, after just 6 weeks of treatment she was back playing, and a new passion was born. Fast forward a few years (and a fair few hockey matches, with at least 2-3 wins) she now has a degree in sports science, along with being a doctor of chiropractic.Sarah is interested in and passionate about all things chiropractic, but specialises in hypermobility (naughty people who bend too much).
