You are here:Home/About us /Testimonials What our clients say about us Sports Massage"Louise kills me kindly and diverts me from pain. She was on time and very considerate. While attending physically to my body, she also showed an interest in me personally. I came to her with a specific complaint but she was happy to work on other areas of my body that were causing problems as well."Ray, OngarOsteopathy"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help. You have always been professional, helpful and your knowledge and techniques are fantastic. After every session I notice a big difference in the way my back feels, plus the easy after care exercises you suggested really helped as well. Something I really found helpful was when I didn't understand something; you explained it in a way that could be easily understood without a load of jargon. I will be honest, the cost factor worried me at the start but after the 1st and 2nd session, it"Mr D.C.Counselling"I would like to say a big thank you to Louise, her counselling came just in time when I was going through a lot of stuff in my life. I was not a believer in counselling (blame the male ego), over the past few months, I have been able to unpack a few things. For those who have inner turmoil, I would highly recommend Louise as a counsellor. One of the aspects of her services I appreciate the most is her forthrightness which forces you to address things you might otherwise overlook or have a bias towards"AB LondonSports Massage"I've always loved magic but never really believed in it! Until Louise, after only one session, took away the neck and shoulder pain I had suffered from for more than 2 years! I can now stand upright without having to support one or other arm to relieve the pain and that is no small matter. At our first meeting, after just a few minutes chatting in her consulting room I knew I was in good care - not just good hands. Louise has a real interest in the well-being of her clients and is not simply interested in a 'quick fix'."Fran B, Leigh On SeaMassage"I cannot praise Louise enough for her expert help in quickly undoing the knots that I had accumulated over many years. She is sympathetic, kind and very genuine in her approach to listening to your problems and is then able to use her expertise to manipulate the offending muscles into reform. I look forward to my now regular visits and always leave the treatment room far more relaxed and happy than when I entered. Her approach to her treatments is as professional as it is relaxed and she has a very calming way about her. I would thoroughly recommend following wholeheartedly the knowledgeable advice she gives."Carol, BrentwoodSports Massage"As a working actor and performer, I regularly have Sports Massages and other massage therapies to treat aches and injuries to keep my body at peak condition. Louise at The Body Matters was able to skillfully identify and treat my injury, and teach me exercises and techniques to help prevent reoccurance. Louise is friendly, reassuring and professional, and I definitely recommend her treatments."Jonathan Andrew Hume, "Simba" in the West End musical, Disney's 'The Lion King'Osteopathy"Having taken the challenge of running the London Marathon I began to suffer a few injuries and was recommended to make an appointment with Matthew. Matthew understood the training program I was following with little explanation and pin pointed specific regions of my body where I was in pain treating them with a mixture massage, stretching and acupuncture. A program of stretches/exercises were given to me to prevent further injury. Matthew was always very professional, knowledgeable and also genuinely interested in my wellbeing. Without his treatments and advice I doubt that I would have made it to the start line of the race let alone complete the course"MR J.W.Coaching/Mentoring"Louise has provided a wealth of wellbeing support to me since (company name) engaged her services. I have particularly benefited from meditation techniques (particularly through supported sessions) and massages to ease back and neck issues. In addition, having someone to speak to independently about whatever is going on, either from a work or personal perspective, is invaluable and Louise offers a considered, non-judgemental approach that invariably leaves you feeling better afterwards. Whilst many people are sometimes a little unsure of what wellbeing support means, I can say that it has only been a positive for me and I would highly recommend having a conversation with Louise to see how she can specifically support you."FHCoaching/Mentoring"We really care about the people who work with us – both staff and clients. Sometimes life and work is not easy and we wanted to find a way of ensuring that at the most difficult times we could support people in the best way we could. Finding The Body Matters was brilliant - the staff love it and were amazed and grateful that we had genuinely thought about their wellbeing. It sent the right messages and more importantly the work that The Body Matters does has helped each and every individual that wanted to get involved. It’s been easy to manage and Louise has been fantastic.’"Company TestimonialCoaching/Mentoring"I worked with Louise from October 2020-December 2020. 3 months after, my life is unrecognisable. I feel completely aligned and nothing shakes me. I wake up every day welling with gratitude and love for my life. It sounds cheesy, but that’s genuinely how it feels. I’ve been to therapy a few times before, but I didn’t realise how ineffectual these other therapists were until I met Louise. After our first session, she (rightly) called me out for putting up a front and leading the conversation. She was gentle yet direct, and this is something I hadn’t experienced before with any therapist. I hadn’t realised it, but previously, I had been maintaining a barrier and guiding the conversations as I saw fit, and thus we never got to the root issue. Louise’s multi-disciplinary approach allows her to really work with you and find the best way to connect. She’s incredibly intuitive and she can read between the lines to see the truth, and sometimes she might push a button you didn’t even know was there. It’s not easy, and it doesn’t necessarily “feel good”. I wasn’t crying or anything, and yet I went through more deep emotions than I had been able to access previously. I was so pissed off with her at points, because I couldn’t manipulate her to my narrative. But I think this is what helped me grow the most. If you’re a type A person that’s usually able to keep your guard up and guide therapists, I’d highly recommend working with Louise. She’ll break through that wall. It won’t feel great while it’s happening, but on the other side is a life experienced with so much more connection, gratitude, and authenticity. I cannot thank Louise enough for everything she’s done for me, and I will definitely keep working with her in the future if I need any mental “tune ups”."OLHypnotherapy"You were incredibly helpful because you allowed me to work things out for myself by making me feel relaxed and able to speak about things that I probably wouldn’t have spoken to friends of family about. I would recommend you because of your very kind, professional and friendly service; the way you listen and talk things through and how you understand what it is that someone is looking to achieve is fantastic. You most definitely helped me to become the person I have wanted to be for a long time. I am much more relaxed and made changes in my life to ensure that this carried on. You also helped me to build my confidence and as you know, I am now with the girl of my dreams."John, BillericayHypnotherapy"I chose Louise as I felt comfortable with her and I very much liked (and needed) her positivity regarding the outcome of my treatment. She was always sympathetic and totally professional. Throughout all my sessions I was listened to and offered encouragement and ideas. I felt the amount of sessions I had were the correct and necessary amount and there was no feeling whatsoever that I was being asked to carry on beyond a point when it was no longer necessary. With Louise's assistance I have achieved the outcome I wanted and now feel much happier, it was money well spent! I would have no hesitation in recommending Louise (and have already done so) and would not hesitate to return should the need arise."Sharon, HockleySports Massage"First Class Massage! Once you've discovered The Body Matters and experienced a superb massage with Louise you wonder how you ever coped before! You leave the haven of peace and tranquillity feeling liberated from aches and pains and with a sense that you're ready to go back into the world with extra energy and determination. Try it once and you'll be addicted forever!"Chris (from London)Sports Massage"I was managing a painful tennis elbow complaint which increasingly restricted my work. I sought the advice of Louise at The Body Matters when my arm was at it's most painful and swollen. Louise listened attentively to my explanations and explored in more detail, the nature of my work, posture etc to build a clear picture before advising deep massage. Admittedly, this was painful initially but I had complete confidence in Louise's professionalism and determination to improve my condition. The swelling & inflammation subsided within just one treatment and did not return. Louise also outlined how to exercise and stretch to improve it and prevent further inflammation. My second visit made this previously painful condition so much more manageable. I wouldn't hesitate to seek Louise's advice and treatment for any condition which could improve so dramatically without the need for medication"Fiona, Leigh On SeaCoaching/Mentoring"You: Challenge me to get out of my head and start to live as all of me Give me confidence and help me to start to appreciate that I am good enough Guide me in how I work on growing as a person; you did that by making me rethink perspectives, challenge my own judgement of me, give me a virtual kick and knock some sense into me when I am clearly being too harsh on myself Help me overcome and move through difficult circumstances and relationships Have helped me recover from what I think was burn-out when I was in the NHS, when I first started seeing you in February 2019 and left the role in June 2019. It has been a long process and I am feeling 80% of the confidence and energy I had before I started in the NHS. I still think I have a way to go to fully recover (no, move on from) it. Have been patient with me as you have tried to help me get out of my head and into my body Help me get clarity Are going to help me be able to live life so I am content, be happy and confident with who I am, recover my health and be me (I hope..) So, thank you Louise"PWMassage"Louise thank you for looking after me. It was one of the best massages I've ever had. Magic hands and lovely to meet you."Natalie Lowe, RIPITUP & Strictly Come DancingYoga for the mind"Louise was recommended to me by a colleague when I shared that I was looking to find my feet again, at work but more importantly, as part of my mental health “fitness”. I didn’t know what to expect from Louise’s sessions but by session 2 I knew I had found my ideal therapist. Some would describe her work as coaching. I choose to describe her as a therapist because she allowed me to explore so much more of my inner being. She listened, prompted and challenged me. The more open I was, the more she helped me see what else I had in me. It’s like yoga for the mind. As we built trust, I felt I could keep pushing a little further each time. Louise taught me many techniques to help my body, mind and, more fundamentally, she helped me discover a deeper, complex and colourful part of me I had buried long ago in lieu of conforming with how I thought the world wanted me to be. I am mentally stronger than ever, more aware and respectful of my own needs and priorities, and no doubt so much happier now that I feel I am my whole self. I credit this to our work together. She helped me see how that edited life was impacting me and I leaned on her support to keep exploring the inner world of my mind and persona. It has been amazing to “meet” and get to know myself at this level. This was only possible because Louise is an open minded, caring guiding partner. I felt she was there for me and I really appreciated her no nonsense which allowed for some amazing sessions together. I would recommend Louise to anyone who feels ready to explore their whole self, their lights and shadows within, be challenged to see things and connect with the world in a different way, with less anxiety and gaining strength from each step you take forward. But remember, yoga for the mind takes just as much time and effort as yoga for the body. And, with everything in life, you get what you give. I know Louise will no doubt have your back through the process if you take the first step."PL LondonCoaching/Mentoring"I am extremely satisfied and comfortable by the professionalism and approach used by Louise. My sessions with Louise helped me enormously and I would strongly recommend anyone truly wanting to change to schedule sessions with her. Louise listens and analyses carefully and is able to understand very well the psychological situation and the thought processes. She is very capable in providing insight and novel ways of thinking and viewing situations, which I have applied after each session. This was instrumental in helping me get better. Louise is also flexible about timing, and always offers extra follow-ups when needed. I am forever grateful to Louise."AZ Book Appointment Opening times We are open on weekdays and Saturdays, with early morning and evening appointments available on request. You are here:Home/Meet the team /Kieran Howse Kieran Howse BSc Hons TCM, MB (Beijing), Member ATCM Kieran Howse practises acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and is registered with the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture UK (ATCM). Kieran became interested in Chinese medicine through the study of karate and Eastern philosophy. In 2002 he began a 5-year course in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Middlesex University (partnered with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine), where he trained at the Asante Academy in London, and the Xiyuan Hospital in Beijing. Kieran has 15 years of professional experience, including 4 years at the Zhai Clinic on Harley Street, where he specialised in fertility. In addition to acupuncture and Chinese medicine, depending on the condition, Kieran also offers nutrition and lifestyle advice, cupping therapy and moxibustion. Q&A with Kieran Howse What are your qualifications? I have a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This was a 5-year course at Middlesex University, including both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. I also have a Bachelor of Medicine from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and spent 6 months training in Beijing during the final year. Upon graduation, I was awarded the Jencons Prize for Complementary Health Science. Why do people come to you? Generally, people come to me wanting a more holistic and preventative approach to treatment, addressing the root as well as the symptoms. Also, many people come to me because they have problems conceiving, as I have previously worked at the Zhai fertility clinic on Harley Street. Do you have any specialisms? I specialise in fertility as mentioned above, but also commonly see people with other complaints. What complaints can you help with that many people find surprising? Skin complaints, indigestion, menstrual disorders, anxiety, insomnia. Most people associate acupuncture with only pain relief but it can do so much more at an internal and psychological level. It can be even more effective when combined with Chinese herbal medicine. Can you tell us a surprising fact about Acupuncture? It doesn't hurt! You are here:Home/Meet the team /Jon Gibbs Jon Gibbs MAPHP MBACP Jon is a Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, and practitioner of BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT), dealing with mind-related issues. COVID-19 Update ***During the height of the Covid pandemic Jon moved sessions online using Zoom. Now that the peak of this has passed it is possible once again to have face-to-face sessions at the Body Matters clinic, but there is still the option of having online sessions*** Jon has an interest in people and society, and this is what led to him doing a degree in Economics and an MA in Social Anthropology. Since moving to Essex in 2002, he has undertaken volunteer counselling at Chelmsford and District Mind and Havens Hospice and given talks on Hypnotherapy at the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in Southend University Hospital. You can find out more about Jon Gibbs here. Q&A with Jon Is it correct that you offer a free first session? That’s absolutely correct. The relationship between therapist and client is incredibly important – as both therapist and client have to feel comfortable working together to make changes. The free initial consultation allows someone to meet me and see where I work, to tell me about what they want to change and for me to explain the various kinds of talking therapies I offer. What are the typical issues that people come for help with? This really is impossible to answer! We, humans, are social animals, so a connection to others is essential to our well-being as well as our chances of survival – and clearly many issues revolve around relationships. Humans also have a tendency to imagine other people think and feel like we do – but of course, this isn’t always the case. Added to this - our closeness to others throws up other issues – for example the grief we can feel with regard to the losses associated with bereavement and divorce. I take a positive view, however – that like our ancestors before us, we have within us all the resources we need to survive and indeed flourish. People sometimes need assistance in finding these resources and making use of them. Do you offer hypnotic gastric band technique for weight loss? I don’t offer this technique. However, I do deal with such issues through a coaching approach that makes use of the techniques of BWRT® to allow for effective and lasting change. Phrases such as ‘weight-loss’ are unfortunate as our mind has a tendency to look for things that we have ‘lost’. Assisting a client to move to a more ‘healthy weight is certainly a positive approach. Are you a member of reputable professional organisations? Yes – and it is important to find a therapist who is! For a client, it can seem a little overwhelming to have these all listed, and for a therapist, it can feel pretentious to list all these, with their logos and the letters which they sometimes confer after one’s name. Briefly then, I am a member of the Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and a member of the National Register of Psychotherapists and Counsellors. I am also registered as a Hypnotherapist with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, and a Member of the Institute of Brainworking Recursive Therapy. Can you tell us a surprising fact about hypnosis? The highly-focused state of hypnosis can be brought about by a swinging pocket watch - although the well-known image of the swinging watch is mostly down to its use in movies. This technique makes use of ‘eye-fixation’ - the fixing of one’s eyes on a single point. When the eyes follow the arc of a moving pendulum it is very different from the way our eyes usually move – which involves jerky movements. These jerky ‘saccadic’ movements can be seen when we visually scan our environment and even when we read words on a page. Following the smooth movement of an object (such as a pocket watch) can induce a state of hypnosis. Hypnotherapists always tell clients that ‘All hypnosis is self-hypnosis’ – in other words the client always has control. Hypnotherapists merely assist and guide clients to change in the way that the client wants. You are here:Home/Meet the team /Maria Louise Maria Louise Maria is an energetic and intelligent fully qualified Counsellor and Wellbeing Practitioner who dedicates her work to the betterment of others. Maria came to Reiki after developing the symptoms of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue in 2002. Feeling discouraged by the medical community, and feeling no improvements to her health, she turned to complementary treatments to help ease her symptoms. After receiving Reiki treatments, she soon realised that she felt a greater sense of wellbeing. Because Maria has experienced such a positive shift in her wellbeing, and of an understanding of who she is, she decided to train and practice Reiki. Using Reiki alongside Spiritual (energy) Healing has helped Maria on many different levels. Alongside a much-improved sense of wellbeing, it led her into a spiritual journey that is continually unfolding and developing. Maria has trained in Reiki, Reflexology, Massage and Counselling. She has also trained in various healing methods, nutrition methods and psychological modalities to help totally understand herself. This in turn enables Maria to understand and help her clients in a much deeper way. She loves to uplift others and help clients remember who they truly are. She believes that we all have the answers to our own health and wellbeing inside although at times we ‘forget’. Her aim is always to help her clients attain what they truly want from their lives. Q&A with Maria Louise What are your qualifications? Diploma in Reflexology Diploma in Massage Therapy Diploma in Facial treatments Advance diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Reiki Levels 1, 2, 3 Accredited Spiritual Healer with the Healer Practitioners Association International Cruise Bereavement Certificate in Bereavement counselling Further training within the fields of eating disorders and mental health, nursing and sound healing. Why do people come to you? Clients come to see me for a wide array of different reasons. We are all so uniquely different and our needs and wants from complementary therapies reflect this. In general the majority of people come to me seeking relief from physical and emotional complaints and want help changing specific unwanted conditions they are experiencing in their lives. Other people come to see me simply for time out, for pampering, for deep relaxation and enjoyment. I offer therapies within a safe, supportive and comfortable space where individuals can enjoy a treatment that will support the body in its healing process and help it return to a state of balance, health and wellbeing. What are the typical complaints that your therapies can help with? Aches and pains Low energy states Stress-related conditions and anxiety Insomnia Headaches and migraines Hormonal and digestive imbalances Problems conceiving Healing injuries faster Toxic overload Circulatory problems What complaints can you help with that many people find surprising? The main aim of Reflexology is to increase the bodies overall state of relaxation but perhaps a more surprising fact about Reflexology is that any pains in the body may be identified by the therapist and worked through the feet. It may not be obvious that Reflexology can help with aching bones throughout the body. As the feet are worked on the nerve and blood supply improves throughout the body, which is good for healthy bones. I have had many clients report that their back, shoulders, neck and leg pains are gone or greatly reduced after one or a series of Reflexology sessions. Reflexology also strengthens the bones of the feet for there are 26 bones on each foot and together this works out to be one-quarter of all the bones in the body. Bones respond to pressure so by applying appropriate pressure to the bones and sides of the feet begin be feel easier and gain improved flexibility and movement. Reiki also helps the body get into a deep state of relaxation and aids the body to release stress and trigger the body’s own natural healing abilities alongside dozens of other benefits. Some benefits, similar to reflexology are a bit more surprising. Reiki can help clients improve their self-confidence and esteem. Also, I have had clients who after a few sessions of Reiki have felt drawn to eating different foods that feel healthier to eat or decide to exclude foods and drinks that don’t feel so good ingesting any more. Clients are also drawn to quit substances that no longer feel good to take into their body due to their body no longer feeling they are working in the best way for them. Can you tell us a surprising fact about Reflexology? Modern reflexology is based on an ancient form of therapy. There is evidence of some form of hand-foot therapy being practised in China as long ago as 4000 BC. Around the same time in Egypt, one hieroglyph from an ancient Egyptian physician’s tomb was discovered depicting two reflexology treatments in session. One treatment is for the hands and one for the feet and the translated inscription reads, “Please don’t hurt me (said by the recipient) and the reply from the practitioner reads “I will act so you praise me”. You are here:Home/Meet the team /Kristin Loeer Kristin Loeer Kristin is a Somatic Practitioner with over 10 years experience of working with chronic pain and complex physical symptoms. She is also part of the education team for Polestar Pilates UK, where she is involved in Pilates Teacher training and development. Soon after Kristin qualified as a Pilates teacher and personal trainer in 2010, she realised that people and their bodies are all uniquely different, and their symptoms are often intriguingly complex. This started a long journey of studying the human body and the nervous system in order to be able to help those who felt rejected or left behind by the standard therapies. Most recently Kristin qualified as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. Since then she has been specialising in offering somatic trauma work at her private practice in Leigh on Sea and online via zoom. Q&A with Kristin Loeer What are your qualifications? I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and I hold an internationally recognised Comprehensive Studio Polestar Pilates Practitioner Diploma, a Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner and Coaching Diploma, a BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Remedial & Clinical Sports Massage, a Diploma in Biomechanics Coaching and a REPS Level 3 Certificates in teaching Mat Pilates and Personal Training. I also have a PGDip in Arts & Cultural Management and a BA(Hons) in Visual Communication. Why do people come to you? Usually, people come to me for two main reasons. Most of them have already explored talking therapies and find that while they may have a better understanding now of their problems, their body simply seems to not agree with their mind. For example, they might understand that they are safe and do not have a reason to be anxious. They may even have ways to calm their minds. Yet they find their heart is still pounding and they are still tense and jumpy. They come to me because they want to connect with their body and seek to work with the trauma they hold in their physiology in order to reduce symptoms and gain a sense of wholeness. Some people come to me because of my background in movement therapy. They often also hold trauma in their body or have had severe traumatic experiences. Or they live with a debilitating health condition that impacts their physical abilities. They come to me in order to engage with their body in a safe and positive way and to be supported by someone who can help them manage and regulate traumatic responses in the body. Do you have any specialisms? I specialise in shock trauma and syndromes. Shock trauma is when we basically function okay in life until we had a fall, surgery, or car accident, after which we somehow did not recover from our injuries and begin to be hypervigilant or unable to sleep. I use Somatic Experiencing and sometimes movement work to help my clients stabilise their nervous system before we then begin to renegociate the traumatic event itself and support the body in healing and rehabilitating from the chronic injuries if there are any. Gentle manual therapy can also be part of this process. Syndromes are complex physical symptoms (more about this further down the page). They often are a result of early childhood trauma and a continued difficult life. Somatic Experiencing can offer significant results for those suffering from syndromes, although this is a long term process. As an ex-artist, I also specialise particularly in working with artists and performers who work with their bodies for a living. Performing is a tough profession, which comes with job insecurity, high-stress environments and requires a person to stay confident and at ease in front of crowds. Actors in particular are frequently asked to draw from their own traumatic pasts in order to play a role. Acting school does not teach how to do this safely. Performers come to me in order to access the instrument of their profession more deeply, grow resilience, access past traumas safely and to expand their talented authentic self beyond the doubts, insecurities and beliefs that hold them back. What complaints can you help with that many people find surprising? I believe that it sometimes is surprising to people when they learn, just how much our emotional stresses and bad experiences can have an impact on our physiology. We all know that stress can give us a headache or an upset stomach. However, its impact on our physical health can be very far-reaching and may even play a role in a vast variety of complex health conditions. In Somatic Experiencing we call those conditions “Syndromes” or “syndromal” symptoms as they tend to have at least partially a root cause in nervous system imbalance, which means a direct link to trauma and stress. Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, IBS, Crohn's and Colitis, Migraines and Chronic Pain are all classed as syndromes and Somatic Experiencing specialises in working with these conditions or symptoms. Syndromes however are understood to be the cause of very complex multiple traumas, which means that the treatment is a subtle and long term process. Can you tell us a surprising fact about Somatic Experiencing? Somatic Experiencing was, to a great extend, inspired by learning from animals in the wild. Peter Levine asked the question of why animals in the wild do not display signs of PTSD, even though they live under a constant threat to their lifes. So he spent several years observing wild animals and their behaviours and physiological responses to potentially traumatic events before he began developing Somatic Experiencing. It was his conclusion that animals easily follow their instincts exercise their fight, flight and freeze responses without hesitation until they are completed. This is something humans do not do. We have become more detached from our bodies and learned to give far more meaning to our analytical thinking than our instincts. Furthermore, we live in a complex society which values are not in tune with our basic survival instincts. For example, if we are in a car crash we quickly need to pull ourselves together in order to give information to the police. We suppress the shaking and our desire to run away from the situation, hence we cannot complete and discharge the trauma in the way an animal would. You are here:Home/Meet the team /Matthew Oliver Matthew Oliver M.Ost DO ND. Osteopath Matthew graduated from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine with a Masters Degree in Osteopathy and Diplomas in both Osteopathy and Naturopathy. The degree included modules in Nutrition, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Visceral Osteopathy, Cranial Osteopathy and a broad range of Osteopathic techniques. Matthew Oliver is an Osteopath, Musculoskeletal pain specialist and massage therapist. His post-graduate education has incorporated the clinical applications of Medical Acupuncture (also known as Dry Needling), Kinesio-Taping and has integrated extensive education in the neurophysiology of pain in order to offer his patients an understanding and context of their pain which evidence identifies as having a huge benefit for those in pain, especially persistent pain. “I integrate education in my approach to my patients on how other aspects of lifestyle and health have a direct effect on pain and suffering. In medicine, this is known as the biopsychosocial approach. I always ask questions about their pain specifically, but also want to know about exercise and activity history, as well as diet and sleep patterns, work and home life. This insight helps create a targeted approach to helping someone in pain and reducing their suffering. I then find it far more beneficial when integrating a rehab program or just target which exercise or exercises can build conditioning in the affected part of the body.” Matthew taught for 11 years at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) where he himself trained. “I found teaching extremely rewarding, and over the years seeing so many graduates pass through the college and enter my profession has been an honour”. Early clinical experience was gained at a specialist Osteopathic clinic in Hampstead serving approximately 50 GP surgeries in the Camden PCT (Primary Care Trust). The diversity of NHS referrals offered a fantastic insight into how manual therapy can improve people’s lives and offer relief from pain. “I was serving referrals from the Chronic Pain Clinic of the Royal Free Hospital, these patients generally had multiple co-morbidities involved in their symptoms and had little or no relief from conventional medicine”. Matthew was the Osteopath for Westcliff Rugby Club (2012/13 season) working with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams as well as the extremely successful Academy sides where he gained vast experience in dealing with sporting injuries, both on the field and rehabilitation. Matthew’s involvement in Rugby followed a period of volunteer work with St John Ambulance. “I felt that the experience in first aid, both pitch side for the rugby club and with St John at sporting events and concerts, would be invaluable in helping my clinical work and that experience has come in handy on a few occasions over the years”. Through The Body Matters’ close relationship with Havens Hospices, Matthew has also been volunteering his time to the fundraisers who have run the London Marathon each year since 2012, several of whom consider they would not have made it to the start line without the expert help and advice. Matthew is committed to meeting the specific needs of his patients by offering an individual, tailor-made structure to his treatment and management plans. Q&A with Matthew Oliver What are your qualifications? I have a Masters degree in Osteopathy from the University of Westminster. I also have a diploma in Osteopathy from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) and have been teaching at the college now for five years. My post-graduate training includes Medical Acupuncture (also known as Dry Needling), Kinesiology Taping, Trigger point therapy and Functional Neuromuscular Rehabilitation. Why do people come to you? I see myself as a means to relieve pain. In most cases, patients can expect to see an immediate reduction in their symptoms although that is obviously not always possible. The difference can depend on how long the symptoms have been there. If a patient initially feels the issue will resolve on its own, they may wait (and wait!). Once they present to me in the clinic, enough time has passed that there has been physiological adaptation made in response to the symptoms. It is then a long process to make the required changes and return the patient to symptom-free. It can also be down to the mechanism of injury. An acute injury may need time to heal, however, getting the correct advice to manage symptoms is essential for the early rehabilitation after injury Do you have any specialism? I do not have any qualification in any speciality, but I do see a lot of patients with both neck and shoulder pain either in combination or isolated. Also, Osteopathy is synonymous with lower back pain so I do treat plenty of patients with lower back symptoms. There is nothing more rewarding than having a grateful patient walk out of the clinic with reduced symptoms when they were barely able to walk in an hour earlier. What are the typical complaints Osteopathy can help with? As I mentioned I do treat a lot of patients with lower back, neck and/or shoulder pain, but I feel confident in my abilities to treat a majority of painful musculoskeletal complaints and injuries, so basically I can, and do, treat any painful condition without a systemic pathological aetiology. What complaints can you help with that many people find surprising? People may be surprised to hear that Manual Therapy can also help with gut issues. The anatomy of the abdominal organs (organs of digestion) has various ligamentous attachments to the front, back and sides of the body. There is also some extremely close relationship with certain muscles and organs (i.e. when a muscle contracts it moves the organ it is in contact with), therefore manually manipulating certain organs in the abdomen can, and will, affect lower back pain, or loin pain, or hip pain, the anatomical connections are limitless, almost! Can you tell us a surprising fact about Osteopathy? Nothing surprises me! You are here:Home/Meet the team /Louise Reader Louise Reader DHP MAPHP (Acc) Dip PT Louise brought a long-held dream to life when she opened The Body Matters in 2008. That dream was to create a friendly and informal centre of trained, screened and specialised therapists – providing the perfect balance of mind, body and soul. Louise hasn’t always been a Wellness Therapist, Embodiment coach, and teacher of Meditation and Teacher of the Realisation Process (RP). In a former life, she trained and worked in IT, until an emotionally challenging year when she was diagnosed with depression, which led her to seek clinical hypnotherapy. During her treatment, Louise began to discover her own passion for wellbeing, and in 2003 she qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist but felt that she still wasn’t fulfilling her potential. As an accomplished runner who has previously completed six marathons, Louise developed a strong interest in achieving a blissful balance between body and mind during her hypnotherapy training. She obtained additional qualifications as a sports massage therapist and personal trainer, before gaining essential experience at an established Essex clinic. As well as owning The Body Matters, Louise works with a variety of UK based companies to help with the wellbeing of their staff and clients. Louise had always been interested in meditation but didn’t know where to start. Meditation has been an important and integral part of her life since 2008: she even went to China for 3 months to live and study in a Monastery! Louise’s continued commitment to her own personal growth has led to an exploration into many different styles of meditation, teaching methods and insights into physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Through this, she has continued to explore so that she can understand her own being at a deep level, which enables her to work with clients at a level rivalled by few. With her methods embracing such a broad spectrum she can sometimes find it difficult to pinpoint exactly what she does, although the following labels have been mentioned by clients and peers: “Counsellor”, “Wellbeing Therapist”, “Personal Development Coach” and “Mentor” to name a few. Louise is passionate about her lifelong work of revealing the side of ourselves that was never broken in the first place. She helps clear conscious and unconscious barriers, limiting beliefs and teaches useful tools, techniques and strategies to deal with stressful or uncomfortable situations in life whether at home or at work. She advocates empowering her clients by uncovering their own innate wholeness for balance, harmony, stability and unity. Louise has a natural way of adapting her methods to each and every client. She is able to deeply listen to her clients and because of her depth of experience and unique blend of skills, clients are able to gain greater clarity and awareness into themselves and their own lives enabling them to understand their own journeys and processes. The result is that clients lead a life that is quality rich, vibrant life, with less stress, more joy and greater well-being. How do I work? What do I do? I teach how to attune to a deeper and more subtle part of your being. This is the part of you that has never been broken. I’m not for everyone: because the work is subtle and takes practice and patience. It’s a journey. I do not teach quick fixes, nor do I want to put a plaster on the issue or problem. This is transformational at a very deep level. I work with the root cause of the issue. I am an experienced traveller on this path. I very much walk my talk, and that’s what I teach. Not from a book or a manual but from experience. I will support and hold your hand on the journey. My journey expands over 25 years. For a long time, I have shied away from truly explaining what I do. And in some ways, maybe it’s not been totally clear even to me. But I am getting clarity. I like to explain in easy-to-understand ways. Another reason I haven’t explained is because of my fear of talking about the spiritual aspect of my work. I am not ‘woo woo’. I much prefer to talk and explain based on understanding and science, in simple easy-to-understand terms. That’s just how I am. I've tried many different tools and techniques, some I still work with and some I have left behind. My work has its foundation in ‘non-dual’. This means that it is subtle, very subtle. We can attune to (feel) a dimension of ourselves, that is physical matter, which is felt as muscle, bone, ligaments etc. Another dimension is energy, which can be felt as a pulsing, vibration. But there is an even more subtle dimension of our self that is consciousness (although still on the electromagnetic scale.) This part of ourselves is experienced as stillness and spaciousness. This is the part that has never been broken, that is whole. What I do is to teach how to easily work through / release the things that hold us back in life. Generally, it is our trauma, our experiences that have been too overwhelming for us at some point in our lives. Another aspect of what I teach is to feel into the fascia (tension) in the body that holds the trauma. Fascia is thought to be the link between the mind and the body. I teach how to inhabit your body, not just be aware of it. Being aware of your body uses your thinking mind. I teach you how to be present and feel more alive in your body. Is it talking therapy? Yes and no. At times it is appropriate to share (but only if you want to.) And there is a certain amount of importance in truly being seen and truly being heard in a way that maybe you have never been seen or heard before. And yet, sometimes you won’t need or want to, because even though you are learning to soften the fascia yourself, emotions, memories, and thoughts won’t come to you to share. Is the work a hands-on treatment? It can be although mostly it isn’t. Can it be done online? Yes. Can it be done in person? Yes. My main way of working is using the Realisation Process (RP). I qualified in it after my experience of it had been astounding. It was what I had been searching for in my life. It helped me heal from an autoimmune disease, it has helped me (and continues to help me) overcome my ‘stuff’ whatever that is. Nothing unusual, things like lack of confidence, anger, fear, grief, imposter syndrome etc I continue to work with clients whom I have helped with OCD, headaches, stress, anxiety, weight issues and the list goes on. Not heard of RP? Its not surprising, it’s relatively new. Developed by Dr. Judith Blackstone Ph.D over 40 years ago. It is gaining popularity in the USA (and slowly over the rest of the world.) Q&A with Louise Reader What are your qualifications? I am a Sports Massage Therapist, Personal Trainer, Clinical Hypnotherapist, a fully certified Realization Process (RP) Teacher and a Realisation Process Trauma Repair Therapist. I also teach a variety of meditation styles. These titles really do not do justice to how I actually work. I have quite a diverse skill set, mainly because of my wide range of interests and hobbies, which have led me to some really interesting workshops and courses. Some might say that some of the things I have done are spiritual, but for me, it has been my passion to understand myself at a deep level so that I can lead a more joyous, authentic and fulfilling life. The outcome of all this has enabled me to help guide my clients so that they can find their own true sense of themselves, with improved relationships not only with themselves but with others too. Why do people come to you? I have a high number of recommendations from my existing clients. The range of reasons why people book in can vary from physical pain to emotional issues or problems. Some book in because they want to be truly listened to, to talk to someone independent of their ‘world’ to get a different perspective, others want to discover more about themselves to help them lead a more content, balanced, peaceful and joyful life. Some want spiritual or personal growth or want to find the freedom within, to unfold into wholeness to embody and find a way to reconnect to joy and the meaning of life in a way that brings more meaning and is more fulfilling and rewarding. I guide clients on a path that I have travelled, and one that I continue to travel. I am an experienced companion. Do you have any specialisms? No. I love the challenge of figuring out how I will work with each client, what is best for them and what are their needs. No two clients are the same, and therefore they receive different treatment. I enjoy the variety. I also have the benefit of working within a great team. What are the typical complaints your treatments can help with? Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are unhappy, unsettled, not at peace with themselves or their world. This can lead to a variety of health issues that can be brought about because of stress. Many do not know the exact cause, sometimes it can be because of a variety of reasons. I help them find their innate qualities to bring back joy and balance into their lives. What complaints can you help with that many people find surprising? For many years now, I have been working with the mind/body connection and yet it never fails to amaze me the depth of what and how we hold ‘things’ within. I have seen first-hand and experienced directly the connection between the mind and the body. Incredibly, I am now able to resolve the tension in the body without touch. I am able to work with the client that can resolve their psychological patterns in their mind and in their body, leading to resolution of what could be holding them back from life. Can you tell us a surprising fact about your role as a therapist? How important it is to be heard, truly heard and listened to in a confidential, safe, spacious environment by someone who has the training and compassion to help bring you to wholeness, to help you uncover your own strengths, desires and needs. That is when true healing takes place. Book Appointment Opening times We are open on weekdays and Saturdays, with early morning and evening appointments available on request.
