What is Activator Technique ? Introduction The activator technique in chiropractics is a very widely used treatment method. It is based on a system of examination and observation of differences in leg lengths. These are thought to be caused by differences in the tone of muscles in the lower back and pelvis. Method Based on the findings from the leg lengths checks, a small spring loaded device called the Activator is then used. This is used to deliver a precise impulse. It applies the appropriate force and direction into the joint. Every vertebra is then checked to see if there is any mechanical problem at each spinal level. The chiropractor can then apply the activator in a very precise way. The activator will give the correct force in up to four different directions for each vertebra. Once treatment is completed, the change in apparent leg lengths can then be used to monitor the effect of treatment. What does the treatment feel like? Patients find the activator method is very comfortable as it places very little stress on the joints. It does not involve any clicking or popping which is often experienced with traditional methods of manipulation. For this reason, Activator is suitable to use on young children, right through to the elderly who may have stiff or arthritic joints. Any slight change in the position of the pelvis is reflected in the way they ride. This can make a big difference to both jockey and horse’s performance. Summary Many people feel that as the Activator treatment is very gentle, it is difficult to see how it can make a difference to their back problems. On a personal level, before I did the training in the technique, I had some doubts about how effective it might be. The way it is used is based on over 50 years of clinical trials and observations. After 20 years of using this method alongside more traditional spinal manipulation, I have found it to be a very useful tool. I have been able to help patients very successfully with this technique. Q & A Q – How long have you been a chiropractor and where did you train? A – I trained at The Anglo European College of Chiropractic ( four year course ) , and qualified in 1986 Q – What areas of chiropractic do you specialise in? A – I use traditional techniques and also Activator Technique, which I find particularly helpful when treating patients with arthritic joints or joints which are reactive to standard manipulation techniques. The activator is a mechanical device which you can adjust to deliver the desired amount of force. What is Activator Technique ? I also trained in Pilates Matwork 1 to assist with rehabilitation of various back problems. Q – How do you keep up to date with current knowledge and training ? A – We have to do at least 30 hrs CPD each year (continuous professional development) . I enjoy attending courses to learn about current trends and treatments. Q – What is the difference between a Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist? A – Our training differs in two main respects. Chiropractors are trained to take and interpret X Rays. A lot of the training involves learning how to manipulate joints in the body. Similarities between Physiotherapy and Chiropractic There is a lot of common ground now between the two professions . We all have to follow evidence based treatment guidelines. NHS physiotherapy however, has to a large degree moved away from hands on therapy , relying on good advice, self care and suitable exercise. Q- Does manipulation hurt ? A – Manipulation involves a very small precise but quick movement, applied to the joint, to reduce the stiffness . Chiropractors call this an adjustment and it is always performed with the patient in a comfortable and relaxed position. We don’t manipulate everybody, only where it is appropriate. I also use soft tissue work to relax the area around the joint, prior to an adjustment. There shouldn’t be any pain, but possibly a noise where a bubble of gas is released inside the joint. Before this Julie had been an international gymnast and represented Great Britain on several occasions. She has a particular interest in sports injuries due to this. After qualifying, Julie worked in the NHS for several years and then became Head Physiotherapist at Springfield Medical Centre in Chelmsford. The Frinton Physiotherapy Clinic was Julie’s first private venture which went from strength to strength. In a short period of time it expanded into a large health clinic. This offered various other health services as well as physiotherapy. On moving to Sudbury, Julie took over from the late Denise Durrant in 2001.The clinic moved to Long Melford,near Sudbury in 2003. Julie enjoys treating patients by making use of her wealth of knowledge. She is a ‘hands on’ physio who uses traditional physiotherapy techniques to help recovery . Treatment also includes teaching appropriate exercises and self care . Specialities are: musculoskeletal problems sports injuries acupuncture recovery after Orthopaedic operations kinesio taping Like all of our practitioners, Julie undertakes regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This keeps her up-to-date with the latest clinical research and treatments. Married with two children, in her leisure time she enjoys walking, swimming and painting. Fiona Drew – Chartered Physiotherapist MCSP HCPC, Bsc (Hons) Physiotherapy, RAD Fiona joined the Iveson Clinic in 2019, working part-time on Monday and Fridays. She trained at the University of East Anglia and then worked at various hospitals throughout Suffolk after qualifying in 2000. This incorporated all areas of physiotherapy including: neurology care of the elderly surgical and ITU Outpatients and MSK Paediatrics Medical Wards & Respiratory Fiona went on to specialise in working with adults with learning disabilites, including many aspects of neurological work. Having worked in this area for 12 years , the service and funding was sadly withdrawn. This required her to decide on a different area of physiotherapy to work within. Away from work, Fiona runs her own dance school, ‘The Stowe School of Dance’. She has been a qualified dance teacher since 1991 , having been a student herself at the Legat School of Classical ballet and Royal Academy of Dance before this. Beyond this, Fiona is also undertaking a 2 year MA in Professional practice in dance technique pedagogy. Her interest in ballet has led her to now working within MSK(musculoskeletal ) and we are delighted she has decided to join our team at the Iveson Clinic. To comply with HCPC requirements, Fiona regularly attends various CPD courses.These advance her knowledge and she plans to particularly specialise in neurology and dance injuries. Chiropractic Richard Iveson qualified as a Chiropractor in 1986 at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic. After qualifying, Richard worked in Sudbury and then set up his own private clinic in Newmarket in 1990. He then started the Iveson Clinic with his wife Julie, in 2001. A range of treatments available include: taping soft tissue work mobilisation manipulation electrotherapy He has a particular interest in Activator Technique and Pilates. Richard is registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), as all Chiropractors must be, and thus abides by the GCC code of ethics and standards of proficiency. He undertakes regular CPD in order to keep up-to-date with his clinical knowledge. When he is not working, Richard enjoys walking, swimming and playing the piano and keyboard. Reception The Iveson Clinic is staffed by our receptionists, Gail Fulbrook, Debbie Perry and Teresa Wright . The clinic can be found in a small courtyard, opposite Long Melford fire station . There is one designated parking space immediately outside the clinic but we would recommend parking along the main road. There are also good public transport links, with bus stops nearby. There are 13 stairs up to the treatment rooms. Home visits are also available.
