Dr Karen CarringtonPsychology & Motivational Specialist Karen is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with a depth of experience – in psychology, in business and in life. She works with Private Individuals, Couples, and with Individuals and Groups in a Business Environment. She has helped people resolve a wide range of problems – big and small - that had not just held them back from achieving their goals and fulfilling their potential, and being happy; but often caused considerable distress. For example: Work Related Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Relationship Issues, Phobias, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), Confidence and Self Esteem, Physical Health Problems, Weight, Addictive Behaviours. Making the right changes offers a solution to our problems; and psychological insights can help us in both our personal and professional relationships and activities. Karen helps you explore the changes you need to make, and discover how you can put these changes into action to lead a more satisfying life. On a personal level, Karen instigated changes in her own life when she was no longer fulfilled by how she was spending her days. After graduating in 1979, she worked and travelled internationally for two years, gaining experience of ‘blue’ as well as ‘white’ collar work. She returned to the UK to build her career, and gained in-depth business experience in blue-chip corporate environments: Direct Sales; Technical Sales; Marketing and Business Development; culminating in starting up and running her own company - which is still going strong today. Since re-qualifying as a Psychologist, she has worked both in the NHS and latterly in private practice - including consultancy work for the UK Home Office and West Midlands Police. Karen is trained in a range of approaches, but is best described as an ‘integrative’ practitioner; which means she can tailor her approach to fit the needs of individual clients, rather than trying to fit ‘square pegs into round holes’. Her mantra for her approach is : I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I do have a lot of information and experience that can help you find your answers. Book Now Our Clients Birmingham Osteopath From our private, patient-driven osteopathy clinic in Edgbaston, some of the best osteopaths in Birmingham provide helpful, professional, and effective treatment to people from all walks of life. Our osteopaths are able to treat a wide range of medical conditions – from headaches, sporting injuries, and occupational injuries, to more general aches and pains. What is osteopathy? Osteopathy is a system of manual healthcare, used to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions. A combination of manipulative techniques, massage, stretching, articulation, and education are used to treat the cause of pain, rather than the symptoms. Osteopathy aims to achieve balance between the structures and functions of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues all functioning together smoothly. Through focusing on the direct relationships between bony articulations & the neuromuscular system, physiological harmony between the body’s moving parts can be restored. This holistic approach makes osteopathy particularly effective within the field of sports medicine. Who do osteopaths treat? Osteopaths’ patients can include the young, older people, manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women, children, athletes, and sportspeople. Patients seek osteopathic treatment for a wide variety of conditions. Some of the more common physical symptoms that respond particularly well to osteopathic techniques include: lower back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, sciatica, whiplash, headaches caused by neck pain, and arthritic pain. What do osteopaths do? Osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, without the use of drugs or surgery wherever possible. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the range of mobility in joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to assist your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise, to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring. How can osteopathy help with sports performance? Osteopathy plays an important role as part of the multidisciplinary approach to athletic performance – from bio-mechanical analysis and joint mobility optimisation, to training recovery. Increasingly, osteopathy is being used within high-level sports training. From Premiership football teams to professional golf organisations and Team GB athletics teams, osteopaths are now accepted team members of many medical MDTs (multi-disciplinary teams). More and more athletes and coaches are finding that osteopathic treatment, and the philosophy behind it, helps to improve their performance – not only from a treatment perspective, but also as a tool for understanding why they may not be achieving their full potential. Working with professional sports teams and sports people Our practitioners have more than 15 years’ experience working with world-class athletes and professional sports teams worldwide, providing osteopathic input in a multidisciplinary team setting. We are recognised internationally for our high standards and level of service. To date, we have worked with PGA European Tour, British Athletics Team GB, Aston Villa Football Club, and Birmingham City Football Club. Our practitioners have gained a wealth of knowledge and expertise as a result of their extensive experience working with elite athletes and professional sports teams. Now, anyone is able to access these very same specialists. Whether you are a recreational golfer, an avid runner, a triathlete, or part of a football team, we can help you to perform to the very best of your physical, mental and emotional abilities. How can osteopathy help with sports injuries? The consensus amongst healthcare professionals is that osteopathy is a valuable preventive measure, as well as a proven means of reducing pain and improving posture. In turn, these benefits impact positively upon other areas and systems of the body, creating a better standard of general health overall. Whether you’ve just taken up a new sport, or you’re already participating in competitions, you may find that you suffer from aches and pains caused by overusing your joints and muscles. Osteopathy can provide the understanding, the treatment plan, and the application techniques to help you with this. Some common sites for sports injury include: Hip injuries; Hamstring injuries; Lower back injuries; Neck injuries; Rotator cuff tears; Knee injuries; Tennis elbow; Ankle injuries; Achilles tendonitis; Plantar fascia issues. These issues can be successfully treated by an osteopath, to help you regain muscle strength, joint flexibility and a full range of motion in the affected area. To make sure that the root cause of your sports injury is identified correctly, a thorough assessment will always be conducted. This may include the following: Orthopaedic examination Osteopathic examination Postural analysis Gait analysis Functional movement testing Muscle strength testing Neurological examination Joint restriction testing Once the underlying issue is identified, we build a treatment programme specific to you, to ensure your full recovery, and to minimise the risk of future injuries. Your lifestyle, line of work, hobbies and general health are all additional factors that help in shaping your personal treatment plan. Intervention Treatment We work with people of all ages – from children through to the elderly – to help them maintain their bodies, prevent problems, and overcome the everyday aches and pains that even the fittest among us can encounter. We offer advice, treatment, prevention techniques, rehabilitation programmes, strength and conditioning programmes, and elite sports performance coaching. Corporate Osteopathic Healthcare The Edgbaston Performance Clinic works with businesses, large and small, to help them maintain a healthy workforce. Some of the services we offer include: Treatment for workers in pain, with immediate access to our clinics; Education around correct lifting practises, seating positions, posture, and ergonomics; Talks and seminars to educate the workforce about how to improve their physical health and mental well-being. This all helps to reduce time lost through common, work-related ailments such as back pain, which continues to be the most common reason for employee absence. Back and neck issues are usually a complex combination of physical restrictions, mechanical problems and tension caused by the stresses of modern life. Chronic conditions can quickly become very restrictive and extremely painful, but there are many measures that can be taken to prevent and mitigate this type of pain. Most people fear pain. This is why, when an episode of pain in the body is triggered, many people restrict their movements, in the (usually) mistaken belief that not using the painful body part will help to reduce their level of discomfort. Taking this approach can actually increase the level of pain, causing it to last for weeks, months, and even years in some cases. Often, this eventually results in loss of muscle strength and impaired coordination when attempting simple, everyday movements. Osteopathy is incredible at understanding, treating and managing cases such as this. Osteopaths are highly trained to understand the intricacies of back and neck pain, and they can help patients through the most acute and painful stages of back pain, back to full health and pain-free movement. Registered & Regulated Osteopathy Birmingham Since 1998, osteopathy has been classed as a statutory regulated profession, and governed by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), on behalf of the government. All of our osteopaths are registered with, and regulated by, the GOsC, and they are also members of other professional associations, including the iO, OSCA, BASEM, and the UKSCA. Osteopaths are required to renew their registration each year to be granted an annual licence to practise. As part of this process, the GOsC checks that osteopaths have current professional indemnity insurance, remain in good health and of good character, and have met mandatory continuing professional development requirements.
